At P-Con this weekend, we were in the bar Friday night discussing shenanigans involving wiffle ducks, and teasing the Cannon Publishing folks about stealing our Sam Robb when Editor Lisa Moore (you know, the quiet one) got a mischievous look in her eye, took the sample model, and winged it through the crowd at Cannon Publishing Editor Michael Morton (we were shocked, too), scoring a direct hit (we were so proud).
Michael, as one might expect, was kind of startled, but really—given the provocation, he should have expected some form of response.
Later that night, during the No **** There I Was Panel, I was getting ready to expound at length, when I was abruptly and treacherously shot in the back by the aforementioned Michael.
On Sunday, Cannon was having a “What’s New at Cannon” panel the hour before our “What’s New at Raconteur” panel, in the same room. Plots were hatched! I ran around the convention Sunday morning with a bag full of wiffle ducks, flamboyantly sneaking up on people, looking around, and giving them a handful of wiffle ducks, while murmuring conspiratorially, “Do not fire until I give the signal” before Scarlet Pimpernel’ing away.
There were so many confused but delighted people.
When their panel was about to end, an unindicted co-conspirator and I charmed sweet-talked convinced bamboozled a mildly puzzled hotel staff member into unlocking the previously-locked door just behind where the Cannon reprobates were sitting.
When they were done, Fox Actual leapt the through the door with a “Ha-HAH!” worthy of Douglas Fairbanks himself, shot Michael Morton dead-square, then grabbed Sam and exfil’d through a hail of wiffle ducks being thrown at the Cannon crew by the wildly enthusiastic crowd.
Once Sam and I got to the hall, we collapsed in fits of laughter; joining the raucous mirth coming from the conference room.
We’d like to thank the Cannon crew for being good sports, and we’d like to inform the con-going public…
…This is where the history of the Great Duck War is going to get all flaggy and arrow-y. :D
Yes. There is video. Yes, we will post it once we’ve…worked on it.
Special thanks for this past weekend goes to:
Mechelle Waltner and Lisa Moore for sitting the booth!
All the Rac Press authors for showing up willing to play!
Crystal and Sam and Todd for throwing a great party!
Cannon for being good sports and going with the Duck attack!
Tully for the room for the Tamale Party!
Cedar for getting the tamales!
Pierce for the idea of the Tamale feed and everyone tossing in on helping!
Research and Development is in progress. You will rue the day, "Fox Actual"!
Seriously, it was a lot of fun, and LawDog actually managed to take me by surprise by coming through what I thought was a "locked door". That should teach me to never underestimate a Fox, even when I am one too.
COVER FIRE! COVER FIRE!
