Come Sunday, I was walking all the way to the back of a plane, to be seated in the last row where there were no windows. Ironically, I began reading Starship Troopers upon takeoff, and given my surroundings, Heinlein’s detailed description of Johnnie’s “drop” was an extremely sensory-appropriate experience. In the air, I managed to edit two-thirds of Jesse Slater’s Cowboy story, “Blobs Attack,” but given my lack of power outlets, the Cowboys were forced into a retreat and again the Mobile Infantry moved in.
Wally Waltner arrived at his timeshare as I did, where we were all staying, and Jonna and Nick shortly thereafter. Wally was an infinitely gracious host whom none of us can thank enough. He provided shelter in a beautiful suite, groceries, meals, and cocktails, and most of all, his great company as he hacked away at his upcoming début novel over the course of the week. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you, Wally!
Nick and I had never met, and it was great to finally put a real person to all the Rac Press messaging on Slack. I knew he was going to be good people and had that confirmed right away. Plus, Nick had never been to Vegas, either, so I was glad to not be the only new kid on the block.
Now, Las Vegas: all week I was taken aback with the beauty of the mountain ranges and palm trees, mesmerized every day. Having spent my adolescent years in greater Tokyo, I was re-energized to be in the heart of another vibrant (albeit dirtier), bustling, dense metropolis. I highly recommend studying the view at night while listening to Vangelis’s “Blade Runner Blues.”
Stay tuned for more adventures at Author Nation 2024!
I was not expecting to be mentioned in a Vegas article. 🤭🤭🫡
I didn't know you grew up outside Tokyo, Lisa. That's cool. And I can see how Vangelis's soundtrack would resonate with the Strip. And Tokyo.
