A very sweet story. It has the feel of a lesser O. Henry.

I like how he captured the feel of how wintertime in those days must have felt like in New York. He could clearly write about more than just masked men dressed in black in old Spanish California.

One of his long-running characters was Thubway Tham (a pickpocket with a lithp), who was usually in NYC. And he did a lot of non-Zorro westerns, as well.
