In the grand old tradition of the pulp era, many great novels first came to readers in serialized form. Raconteur Press is stepping into big shoes as it debuts novels from the little press that could, and are bringing you in true pulp fashion: serial novelizations.
In the more modern era, there are early access passes, superfan perks, and Baen Books has their eARCs for eager readers to get their hands on their favorite author’s work before it’s released to the general public. All those concepts inspired us here at Raconteur Press to come up with a crazy idea whose time may have come again. Here’s how it’s going to work.
We will be releasing the novel as a serial in three parts. All parts will be available for preorder on an announced date, and the parts will go live one after the other, a week apart. You, the reader, can click the preorder button on all three parts, and then it will automagically load on release day in the reading device of your choice. The serials will have special illustrations, chewy cliffhangers with guaranteed payoffs to keep you hanging no longer than you want to, and bite-sized portions for your busy schedule. However! If you don’t want to do this, all you have to do is wait. A month after the first release date, the whole book will drop, in its entirety, and in paperback form, as well. This complete version will also be available in the Kindle Unlimited program if you are a subscriber. The special early-release serials will no longer be available for purchase by this point, so you don’t have to worry that you’re buying the wrong version. Plus, there will be signs (and by this we mean different-looking covers).
All you have to do, if you are willing to be patient (but who wants to wait?) or you don’t want to have the serial experience with bonus content (did I mention illustrations?), is hang out for a month hoping no one is cruel enough to post spoilers. People are never mean on the internet... Ahem.
For the impatient, this also gives you an opportunity to support your author by giving their book an early boost. Plus, you get to gloat at other fans who think they can hold out a month. It’s a win-win!
I'm currently angstipating over which short story to attach to which finalized novel. Also rubbing my hands together in antici....pation.
I wrote a story in 16 parts for an indie publisher based on the old "Tom Corbett: Space Cadet" TV show that was published on Kindle Vella. It was a lot of fun. Vella's going away, but the publisher will collect the chapters and put the story out in a book. I can't wait to see what you do with your serials.
